LR's ridiculous new idea!

What is up the one cart deal on the light rail?

Seriously...........?

I have the joy of coming downtown everyday. I take the opportunity to ride the light rail home. (Since I am a good citizen and carpool on the way to work) Usually it is a pleasant ride home, I get to enjoy the blasting air condition while I sit in the two sitter sits playing Tetris or reading a book all by myself. However, lately it has been ridiculous!

Prime Time: 5-6pm! It is something like rush hour, everyone wants to get home, and so we all leave at the same time. Instead of rushing cars that are honking, the stop and go and every once in a while a car accident, you get all of those joys with actually people! Yes, rushing people getting on and off of the light rail, occasional people yelling at other people, and people running into each other because of how packed it is on the ONE light rail cart.

Whoever came up with the idea of the one cart during prime time, needs to ride the light rail during prime time.

Dear Person,

Please be kind and add another cart for my sake. Not that I am selfish and enjoy my own space, it is the fact that I think everyone on the light rail would enjoy their own bubble space. Plus, I get tired of standing and holding on to the so-called bar above people sitting. The other day, I fell into someone’s lap, one word embarrassing.

Thank you for the thought of saving cost, but please save me and the other 250 people on the light rail during prime time in one cart!

Trying to enjoy life~ in hope next time I fall on to someone’s lap it's a very gorgeous man.

AHMI change

The pass couple of weeks I have been working on the institute's (AHMI) Case Study. The case study is a huge part of the institute; it takes place through out the second day of the four day event. However, this year’s case study has a new twist.

Last Year:
Participants had two options; National Collegiate Dialogue Discussion or Case Study Simulation. Both events were played out in th
e hotel ballroom and other break out rooms. Students were put into groups of 10 to 12 to discuss similar topics. After discussing the problem, applying their academic and experiential knowledge of the situation, students are asked to come to a conclusion to present to a panel of professionals. This event would take up most of the day, leaving time for one more workshop at the end of the day.

New to this year (and hopefully improved):
No National Collegiate Dialogue Discussion. This year all students will participate in the case study experience. Students will adventure off into nonprofit world outside of the walls of the hotel. Students will register online to the nonprofit subcategory, such as: Faith-based, education, health care and science, arts, culture, etc. The students will travel to the host site nonprofit where they are given a particular case study situation from the nonprofit they are hosted. Students will break into teams and begin work. The students will then present their findings and recommendations to a panel of staff, volunteers and, if available, a member of the host site’s broad of directors. This will be an all day event, traveling to different sites, getting to see the city outside of the walls of the hotel.

This year we are focusing on "real situations", where the students can make a "real" change.

I am hoping the students will like the change and it can carry into other future AHMIs to come!

Enjoying life, working on the change~(AHMI 2009) Out with the OLD, In with the NEW

Light Rail Pass- Who is paying, what?

I just found out Arizona State University is charging all students for a U-Pass per semester. Edward, one of the StARs has just written a great post about the increase. Feel free to check out his post, Edward. I am going to summarize in bullet points.

1. You have to pay per semester $40 for the metro pass
2. Yes, it is unlimited rides on the light rail and bus transit
3. The $40 fee will cover from August-December
4. You can buy a full year (2 semesters) pass August-May $80
5. Regular price per light rail is increasing on July 1, 2009 to $3.50 per day
6. When doing the math you only have to ride 12 days to get your $40 bucks worth
7. So, is it a great deal?.......YES!
8. Buy your pass at the cashier services on the 1st floor by the cafe in UCENT building (Downtown)

My initial thoughts were to complain about having to pay for the U-Pass. I pay so much in tuition, don't you think they can cover my pass? However, let’s be honest here, we have had the pass free for the pass four years. It was about time that we all would have to pay for our pass, especially since the light rail has been added. So, I am okay with the fact to pay a small fee, especially since it is such a bargain for students. In a wired, odd way, thank you ASU for keeping the fee low for students.

Enjoying life riding the light rail~

Welcome to my desk ....

Welcome to the desk of the AHMI 2010 Intern. Yes, this is how it works when you get a "real job" you get an official desk.
Since the nonprofit I work for (American Humanics) is based out of Kansas City, MO, I get to be located in the Lodestar Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Innovation on the 5th floor.

I get the joy of working in a cubical (Not as exciting). However, I still enjoy my office space with my name on it! Since I communicate with people from Kansas City office I get the joy of using Skype. Technology is lovely, if you don't know what Skype is, I would give it a try.
Skype is software that allows users to make telephone calls over the Internet. Not ordinary calls but video calls, I video conference all day. Which I might tell you is very interesting when you are in a cubical, open for many to listen.Recap..........
1. Welcome to my desk!
2. Did I tell you I have my name on my own desk!
3. Try out Skype

Enjoy life, from whatever desk you sit behind~

Farewell...

As the school year ends, I am sad to say goodbye to our fellow StAR member, Amarone. Amarone graduated from the TDM program and is planning to move to Miami and escape the desert heat. He has been an amazing asset to the StAR team and extremely awesome friend! I am going to miss his smiling face and his interesting insight of the tourism degree. In the mean time, he’s continuing to work at the Royal Palms, and will blog for the StARs until the end of June. You will be missed

I wish you the best of luck, you are going to do amazing things with your life.

Where now...

Happy Summer!

Where now.... it's the big question? At least that is what everyone keeps asking me. I have always had everything planned out, everything....I'm a planner. However, for the first time in my life, I'm not sure what's next. I technically walked in May but still have to complete my internship in the Summer/Fall. I guess that is what is next. So let me rephrase myself here.

Where now....
I am currently working in my internship that I started last December (2008) with American Humanics.

What's American Humanics....
The program is an innovative course of study that equips college and university students to become skilled professionals and leaders in America's nonprofit organizations. An association of students and nonprofit professionals on 65+ campuses across the nation. American Humanics purpose is to certify professionals to strengthen and lead nonprofit organizations of tomorrow.

So what do I do......
I am planning AHMI, American Humanics Management/Leadership Institute. AHMI is a nationwide institute for nonprofit professionals and students to further their education in leadership and management of nonprofits. Pretty much, we have about 1,000 participates come to the host city (which is Phoenix in 2010) and participate in workshops, case study, EXPO, career coaching and other amazing sessions. It is a 3-day conference planned in January by me and the national AHMI planning team. My main job is to be the liaison for American Humanics and Phoenix.

Pretty sweet, right? Yeah it sounds like fun on paper or in writing, but it is a huge job! I am constantly learning, everyday. It is amazing internship, I wouldn't trade it!

Where now....... for now, work as hard as I can to plan the best AHMI in history! Pretty big job, stay tune for more on my internship with AH!

Enjoying life with my internship~
